Amen! I was the family member that did the entertaining but was never really good enough for the zealots. I do not miss them drinking themselves silly, eating like they haven't seen food before, their kids running a muck and leaving just as clean up starts. I don't miss the gossiping about who is doing more in the congregation. I love being shunned! NMKA

I like being shunned - how about you?
by THE GLADIATOR init was painful at first but now i see the advantages of not having needy relatives spending the weekend with me and scoffing my food and raiding my bar.
my wife is happier too.
it's like having a heavy rucksack removed.. i have 39 jw relatives and 38 of them shun me along with the army of ex-friends who remain in the tower.

How squeamish are you?
by Gregor inlets say you are enjoying a glass of good red wine while preparing dinner.
you pick up your glass for a sip and see a gnat floating on top.
1. pour the whole thing in the sink and pour a fresh one.. 2. pick out the gnat and drink the wine.. 3. ignore it and drink the wine and the gnat.. i am a 2. i have done a 3 and it didn't spoil my appetite.. .

2 or 3. He isn't hurting anybody, stuff like that probably goes in your mouth while you are asleep anyway. Wasting wine is a sin in my new religion! NMKA

I see both sides. What is a JW suppose to do if they are unhappy not allowed to rationally discuss it with the spouse, maybe go for some counselling, if worse comes to worse move out be separated, get a divorce and try to hurt people as little as possible. They have no choice but to go out with a bang. The aftermath is more devastating than for the average couple. They guilty party will never live it down and the innocent mate has to sit there and take it or they are quickly the bad one, they may get some help from the congregation but only if they are there at every meeting. Also people have such a hunger for the juicy details that they ask the kids ( lived that). Bad situation. NMKA

How sad for you Dad and his family. I have worked with many demented/ alzheimer's patients in my career. I was taking care of an demented patient the other day and she thought her son was her dad and that I was her mom while I was proving her care (which was a bit painful) she held he son's hand and said " daddy why do you let mama hurt me" she was sobbing softly. Then when I was done we got her all comfortable covered her with a warm blanket and tried to distract her from the fact that she's in the hospital had an IV etc. Then she wanted me to sit with her as she rubbed my arm and called me mama. It occurred to me in that moment she forgot what just happened and really couldn't anticipate the future, but for those few minutes she was comforted and smiling. My point is, to live in the moment with your dad, maybe he liked petting a dog, talking about cases he worked on or eating a hot fudge sundae. Maybe he can still enjoy these few glimpses of his former self even if just for a moment. I am so sorry for your loss. NMKA

My Story - Abbreviated but still way too long
by jamesmahon inas i have enjoyed reading everyone elses biogs here i thought it was about time that i put my own down.
i have thought about why i want to do this and whilst i can pretend it is for the better good and it will act as a warning for others thinking of joining the witnesses, actually i think it is because i think it is just because it makes an interesting story and as will become apparent a good part of my life i had to live a lie and i now find it really liberating just to be really open with everyone.. i also thought about how to write it.
was tempted to write it to the tune of the fresh prince but thought that might get a bit tough after about verse 38. then wondered whether i should do it in the style of one of those biography pieces in the awake but that would involve reading an awake to mimic the style and just couldnt be bothered.

Yes very very brainwashed! I try to explain to friends the things I did for years, strained family relationships, fear of being shunned and they just look at me like I am nuts. The only way I can explain is that it was complete mind control. NMKA
